Albert E. Walkoe, Founder (1925-2007) Al Walkoe had a deep sense of justice. With government funding on the decline, Al's commitment to legal services for the poor inspired him to found AHA when he retired from his own legal practice.

Al unselfishly devoted his considerable energy, time and resources to the cause of "justice for all". Greg Knoll, Executive Director and Chief Counsel of Legal Aid Society, called Al "the father of legal aid in San Diego"..."Al was one of the pillars of the community...People think of pillar of the community and they think of money and power, but Al wasn't about that. He was the community's conscience..."

One of Al's favorite quotes reflects this:
"If we are to keep our democracy there must be one commandment: Thou shalt not ration justice."
